How to Write a Character Letter for Court | Full Guide

What if a letter could save someone? Have you ever wondered if attesting to your friend’s character could be the reason they’re discharged from court? What if you could change the entire narrative of a court proceeding by standing as a witness through a letter? This is what a character letter can do.

A character letter is tendered in court to attest to the defendant’s character. In this article, we’ll explain how to write a character letter for court and provide a sample character reference letter for court. Let’s get started!

    Table of Content

    What is a Character Letter?

A character letter is a written document that speaks on a person’s character, values, and behavior. It is usually written by a friend, family member, employer, teacher, spouse, etc. In rare instances, it can also be written by the person whose character is in question.

In court, a character letter helps the judge or jury understand the defendant; their circumstances and their way of life. It is written to provide a more rounded view of the defendant as a way of requesting leniency in sentencing.

At What Stage in the Court Proceeding Can a Character Letter be Tendered?

A character letter can be written at any stage of the trial; however, it is most often used after sentencing.

If you’re writing a character letter before the defendant is sentenced, you’d be writing it to attempt to convince the judge that the defendant is innocent. However, if you’re tendering it after the defendant has been convicted, then your goal should be to request a mitigated sentence for the defendant.

How to Write a Character for Court

A character letter for court is a technical document—it’s not your regular formal letter. A character letter requires strategy and critical thinking. In order for your letter to be admissible in court and considered, you must sound convincing, yet not patronizing.

Are you wondering how you can successfully achieve this? Not to worry; this section covers the step-by-step process of how to write a character letter for court. Whether you’re writing for a friend, family, or even yourself, you’d be ready to pick up your pen and paper at the end of this article.

How to Write a Character Letter to a Judge for a Friend or Family

Most often, a character letter is written by a friend or family to the defendant—it is written to show the judge or jury that the defendant isn’t an entirely evil person, rather was just misled.

Let’s discuss the various steps you must take in learning how to write a character letter to a judge for a friend or family member.

Step 1: Understand the Circumstances of the Case

To write a compelling character letter, you must understand:

    • what the case entails
    • whether the defendant has pleaded guilty or not guilty
    • why a character letter has been requested, and the role it’ll play in court
    • what stage the case is in.

Understanding these details will help you build a strong case for the defendant. For instance, as mentioned earlier, writing a character letter during trial and after sentencing are totally different—the goals are different.

When writing a character letter while the trial is still ongoing, you’re probably trying to convince the judge that the defendant is innocent—you’re aiming to influence the court’s verdict. However, when you tender a character letter after the verdict has been reached, your major aim will be to request a mitigated sentence for the defendant by reason of their good standing in society.

Pro Tip: Don’t write a character letter if you’re not closely related to the defendant or unable to vouch for their character. You may find it difficult to convince the judge of the defendant’s character if you don’t know them too well.

Step 2: Start with the Basics

A character letter is structured like a formal letter; hence, you must include the following basic details:

    • Your name, address and date at the top right
    • The recipient’s contact details on the top left
    • A formal salutation
    • A heading

Below is a sample of step two on how to write a character letter to a judge for a friend or family:

    Mrs. Kendra Miles,
    No. 25, Yakubu Gowon Street,
    Maitama, FCT-ABUJA

    23rd April, 2025

    The Honorable Judge,
    Federal High Court,
    Abuja Judicial Division,
    Abuja-FCT

    Your Honour,

    CHARACTER LETTER FOR JOHN MILES

    Step 3: Introduce Yourself

Next up, introduce yourself, your occupation, and explain how you’re affiliated with the defendant.

Step 4: Describe Your Friend’s Character

Next up on how to write a character letter to a judge for a friend or family, describe the friend’s character, using specific examples you’ve witnessed throughout your years knowing them.

Pro Tip: Show, don’t tell. Use stories to highlight those outstanding qualities that you want to bring to the judge’s attention. For instance, rather than just saying your friend is honest, write a story that shows their honesty.

    Step 5: Acknowledge the Situation

If your friend is facing serious charges, do not ignore those charges. Acknowledge the seriousness of the situation, but reinforce your belief in their character and potential for change or redemption.

Pro Tip: If you’re writing the character letter after the defendant has been convicted, don’t try to prove their innocence. Rather, acknowledge the verdict and state your request for a lesser sentence based on the person’s character.

    Step 6: Close Out

Let the court know you’re writing this letter voluntarily and sincerely, believing that your friend is of moral standing and deserves some leniency. Also state that you’re available if the court needs further clarification.

Finally, thank the judge for their time and sign out with your full name. Include your phone number and email below your signature for reference.

Pro Tip: Ensure your character letter is well formatted. Seek information about the standard formatting of character letters in that court. You can get this information from the defendant’s lawyer or the court clerk. A well-formatted character letter is more likely to hold the attention of the judge than one that isn’t.

How to Write a Letter to a Judge on Behalf of Yourself

Most times, the court will not allow a defendant to write a character letter on behalf of themself.

However, if you’ve been granted permission to write a character letter on behalf of yourself, follow these steps:

    1. Draft your name, address, date, judge’s name, court name, court address and formal salutation in the format of a formal letter. You can see a sample of this step in the previous section on how to write a character letter to a judge for a friend or family.
    1. Briefly state who you are, why you’re on trial, and why you’re writing.
    1. Take responsibility for your actions, especially if you’ve already been convicted; don’t try to deny the allegations against you.
    1. Describe your character, demonstrating instances when your positive attributes shone.
    2. Mention any steps you’ve taken to rectify the situation and build on your personal development, e.g., compensation for the victim, personal counseling, community service, etc.
    3. Respectfully seek leniency, like a mitigated sentence or a chance at parole.
    4. Thank the judge for their time, sign the letter with your full name, and close out.

    What is a Guarantor Letter?

A guarantor letter is a formal written document in which a person (the guarantor) assures a receiving party of an individual’s good conduct and agrees to be held accountable if the individual in question fails to meet their obligations to the receiving party.

For clarity, here are the key points:

    • The receiving party has entered into a professional relationship with the primary party, and needs assurance that the primary party will not fail in their obligations
    • The guarantor steps in as a third party to this professional relationship, providing the assurance that the receiving party needs, and committing to take responsibility if the primary party breaches the terms of engagement

Your guarantor could be your mentor, boss, landlord, etc. Most organizations would not accept a guarantor letter from someone directly related to you, such as your mother or brother.

How to Write a Guarantor Letter

Now that you know what a guarantor letter is, let’s discuss how to write it. This section covers two major types of guarantor letters: the one for school and the one for employment.

How to Write a Guarantor Letter for a Student

Before you learn how to write a guarantor letter for a student, you should understand the legal implications of a guarantor letter.

A guarantee letter means that you’re attesting to the character, reliability and trustworthiness of the student in question. If they fail to meet the obligations guaranteed for them, you would be held responsible, and the consequence may include financial commitments and legal action.

Hence, it is advisable not to write a guarantor letter for someone you’re not too familiar with and whose character you cannot wholeheartedly vouch for.

Once you’ve made your decision, follow the steps below to learn how to write a guarantor letter for a student:

    Step 1

First things first, write your name and address at the top right corner of the page.

    Step 2

Move one space down on the same corner, and write the day’s date. A sample of the first two steps is provided below:

    Mr. Sule Audu,
    Plot 123, Christ Embassy Lane,
    Jikwoyi, FCT-ABUJA

    1st January, 2021

    Step 3

Now move one space down on the top left corner of the page, and write the recipient’s name or position, address, and. a formal salutation. Ensure to leave a gap before the salutation, i.e:

    The Vice Chancelor,
    Women of Hope University,
    No. 11, George Bush Street,
    Ikoyi, Lagos state

    Dear Sir/Madam,

    Step 4

    Up next on how to write a guarantor letter for a student, draft the heading of the letter. It should read something like this: GUARANTOR LETTER FOR {STUDENT NAME}

    Step 5

Introduce yourself and state your relationship to the student. Write the student’s full name, Faculty and ID number for reference.

Pro tip: When introducing yourself, you may also indicate that you’re a person of good standing in society and capable of covering any losses incurred by the student, both financially and legally. Such information adds more validity to your guarantor letter, attesting to your own character and capacity, as no institution will take a guarantor letter from someone who has an ugly reputation.

    Step 6

The sixth step involves the undertaking itself—here, you’re to state your attestation of the person’s character and your willingness to take responsibility for any mishap caused by the person.

How to Write a CV: Step-by-step Guide

Before you start drafting your CV, it’s important to conduct some research on the organization you’re applying to. Get to understand what they do, their target customers and their company’s culture. This information will help you tailor your tone and highlight experiences and values that align with the organization’s identity.

Pro Tip: Read the call for applications/job description again and again, and yet again. Identify key responsibilities, qualifications, and keywords used in the job listing. These keywords are what the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) will be on the lookout for; hence, incorporating them into your CV increases your chances of passing the initial screening.

So here’s a step-by-step guide on how to draft a CV. As we proceed, we’ll share a downloadable copy of the Nigeria CV format with you.

    Step 1

Write your name boldly at the top of the page. Underneath, insert your email, phone number, and portfolio link, if you’re a writer, filmmaker, or developer, or if you have any means of showcasing your work via a portfolio. Find an example below:

         DR. YETUNDE ASOKE

Yetundeasoks@gmail.com.  +234819741xxx  Portfolio (this should be hyperlinked to your portfolio)

    Step 2

Write a brief summary about yourself and your work experience. Make it catchy and yet straight to the point.

Also read: Can I Work for a US Company and Live Abroad? 5 Must-Know Facts

    Step 3

Start the body of the CV with your educational background. While some people prefer to state all their educational qualifications from primary school to date, others just start with their first degree from the university. The latter is more professional. It even saves time and space, particularly if you have a lot of educational qualifications. Remember, you don’t want your CV to be unnecessarily lengthy.

    Step 4

Next up is your work experience. This is the part where you either pin the attention of the hiring team or you lose their interest. Here are some tips for writing a grasping work experience in your CV:

    • Highlight your key achievements in each role. Don’t just focus on your duties; rather, brag about what made you stand out in that role. E.g., I grew the company’s Instagram page from 50 followers to 2 million followers in 6 months. Now tell us, which organization wouldn’t want to hire a social media manager who produces that kind of result within such a short time frame? Highlighting your achievements shows that you know what you’re doing, and you’re good at it.
    • Show, don’t tell. This approach is similar to the point above. Rather than telling us in your CV that you’re a great social media manager, show us, through relevant examples, how you’ve “greatly” managed the social media pages of previous organizations you’ve worked with. Brag about your key results.
    • Make your points short and straightforward. One thing HR dislikes is reading lengthy CVs, particularly if there’s nothing interesting about them. State your key points and move on. You can explain more detail in your cover letter
    • State relevant experiences only. It doesn’t matter if you were the one who built the Burj Khalifa; so long as the experience, knowledge or skills gained from that work are not relevant to your current application, they won’t impress the hiring team. So rather than stating all the work experience you’ve had in your lifetime, streamline each experience to each application.

    Step 5

The next step on how to write a CV is to state your volunteering experiences. A lot of people forget or ignore this part, but it’s equally important, as you could use those experiences to demonstrate core soft skills that are relevant in the workforce.

Also read: Top 9 Remote Jobs That Pay Weekly – No Waiting!

    Step 6

List out all your soft and hard skills. Remember, you’ve already demonstrated most of them when highlighting your work and volunteering experiences; however, it’ll be relevant to still list them out for further reference.

Pro Tip: Don’t lie or exaggerate in your CV. A lot of people think that stating untrue facts will help them secure a job. While this may happen, It willl still backfire someday. So, for instance, don’t state that you’re good with Canva when you haven’t used it before, or say you’re proficient in French when the only word you know is Bonjour.

    Step 7

State your awards, if any, as well as certifications. Remember all those online courses you took on Coursera? Now’s the time to brag about them, particularly the ones related to your role.

    Step 8

As a final step, write your hobbies and references. This step is optional and might be adopted or discarded based on the company culture.

    Step 3

On the top left corner of the page, insert the recipient’s details, name or position in the school, and the school address.

    Step 4

Leave one space, then write a formal salutation to the recipient, i.e., Dear Sir/Madam, or Dear Mrs. Abraham, or Dear Vice Principal Admin. Remember to always include a comma after the salutation. Below is a sample of steps 3 and 4.

    Step 6

Next up is your introduction. We always advise that you start your cover letter with an intriguing introduction, one that makes the reviewers want to keep reading. The best approach for this is storytelling. But you could also use a captivating report, quote, or question. Whatever approach you pick, ensure the content is relevant to your application. Here’s a sample of a great introduction in a simple application for a teaching job:

What if teachers were students’ best friends? What if students weren’t scared of us but rather could open up to us like we were their older brothers and sisters? Would this improve their academic performance? Would this help their overall well-being? Over the past 10 years, I have adopted effective personalized teaching strategies across 2 schools, helping 5,000+ students-including mentally challenged students-perform better academically and all around by understanding their unique needs and personalities. This groundbreaking approach is what I hope to bring as a teacher at the Cathedral Global Schools.

    Step 7

Next, tell us about your relevant work experience in the teaching field. Highlight a skill that makes you stand out, or an award you won, or a milestone you attained in your previous roles. When it comes to bragging about your achievements, don’t hold anything back as long as they relate to the application.

    Step 8

Finally, thank the reviewer for their time and consideration. State that you have references available on request, and you can provide further documentation to facilitate the application, if need be. Close out with a salutation, sign and insert your full name, e.g:

    Sincerely,

How to Write an Application Letter in Nigeria for Any Position

Your application letter tells the hiring team whether or not to move you up for an interview. So, it is important to put your best foot forward. Now is not the time to draft mundane details that are already in your CV. Rather, it’s an opportunity to really express your uniqueness and relevance for the vacant position.

In this section, we’ll show you how to write the best application letter for a job vacancy in Nigeria. No matter the position you’re applying for, these steps are applicable.

Step 1: Read About the Job

Your first step to drafting the best application letter for a job vacancy is to read thoroughly about the job. Familiarize yourself with the following information:

    • The role you’re applying for: Read the job description, qualifications needed, and other relevant details. This would help you determine which of your experiences and achievements are the best fit for the role.
    • The company culture: The culture of some organizations makes them the best fit for creative application letters, while for others, it would be best to maintain 100% professionalism.
    • The cover letter specifications, if any.
    • The company’s milestones, history, awards, etc. This will help you create connections between your experiences and their mission, highlighting how you’re best fit to advance their goals

    Step 2: Draft the Basics

Once you’re done conducting thorough research on the job you’re applying for, start drafting the basics of your cover letter. These include your personal information, cover letter title, etc. Here are all the details:

    • Name and contact information: You may choose to write this as a header on the top of the page, like a CV format, or you can draft it like a letter, placing it at the top right corner of your page
    • After your personal information comes the hiring manager’s name or title, company name, and company address. These should be written on separate lines at the top left corner of the page, e.g:

    The Hiring Manager,
    Tesco Foods Plc.,
    No 54, Jabi Lane,
    Maitama, Abuja

    • Under the above information, comes a formal salutation to the hiring manager, e.g., Dear Sir, or Dear Mr Markle
    • Finally, a captivating title for your cover letter, though this is optional

This step may look trivial, but it’s very important. Most hiring managers will not go beyond this part if it’s not properly written. So if you want to learn how to write an application letter in Nigeria for any position, you’ll have to perfect this step.

Step 3: Draft a Standout Introduction

Your reviewers are bored. They’ve read hundreds—if not thousands—of applications, and they’re bored. So your job is to reignite their feelings by drafting a captivating introduction.

A good introduction can begin as a story, quote, statistics or any such intriguing approach. However, ensure you tie the introduction to a relevant point.

    Bad Introduction: Lacks Captivating Details

I am writing to express interest in the position of a Team Manager at Tesco Foods Plc. I am a graduate with 19 years of experience in food science….

    Exemplary Introduction

I failed. Six years ago, I stood nervously in front of a panel, about to defend my thesis. I had rehearsed every line and memorized every data point—but halfway through, I froze. My hands shook, my slides didn’t load, and the room felt heavier with every second. It was the lowest point in my academic journey. But it was also the turning point. That day taught me that failure isn’t the opposite of success—it’s part of it. I went back, rewrote my research, sought feedback, and two months later, I returned to that same room and delivered a distinction-worthy defense. That experience gave me resilience, determination, and humility. It is these qualities I now bring to a role as a Student Coach.

To give your introduction a more human touch, you can state some of your interests and hobbies, but ensure they connect to the job. For instance, if you’re applying for a Museum manager role, you can talk briefly about your love for arts.

Step 4: Boast About Key Achievements, Experiences and Qualifications

Next, write about your key achievements in line with the role you’re applying for. You don’t need to discuss every achievement or experience you have; simply highlight the ones that are relevant to your application.

Step 5: Close in Grand Style

As you begin to wrap up your draft of the best application letter for a job vacancy, you can state a simple, witty fact in the last paragraph, for instance:

With the global economic crisis, no company can afford to waste a single penny—every organization needs razor-sharp eyes on what goes in and out of their coffers. That’s why having a meticulous and detail-oriented financial accountant is more important than ever. I’ve often been commended for my exceptional eye for detail, and it’s this strength I bring to the table. I am confident that with my skills and dedication, I can help Tesco Foods Plc. optimize its resources and drive smarter financial decisions.

Finally, thank the hiring manager for reading and for considering your application. Don’t forget to sign out!

Bonus Tip: How to Format the Best Application Letter for Job Vacancy

Writing the best application letter for a job vacancy goes beyond the content—it’s also important to have an attractive and standard layout. Here’s how to format the best application letter for a job vacancy:

    • Your font size should be 10 points minimum, and 12 points Maximum
    • Use a standard professional font, e.g. Arial or Times New Roman
    • Align your text to the left, and use 1-inch margins
    • Paragraph, punctuate and capitalize appropriately, and check for spelling errors

Top 10 Private Universities in Nigeria | 2025 Update

You’re ready to go to the University. You’re about to write the JAMB and WAEC exams, and you want to know the best universities to select.

In this article, we’ll uncover the top 10 private universities in Nigeria. These universities have been listed based on their academic excellence and student ratings.

So if you would like to study in a private university, consider one of these top 10 private universities in Nigeria.

    Table of Content

    What are Private Universities?

Private universities are tertiary institutions that are owned, funded, and managed by individuals, religious organizations, or corporate bodies rather than the government. They operate independently but are regulated by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in Nigeria.

Some examples of private universities in Nigeria are Covenant University, African University of Science and Technology, and Afe Babalola University.

Private universities often have higher school fees than public (government) universities. One reason for this is that private universities do not receive financial support from the government; instead, they rely entirely on tuition fees and private donations. In contrast, public universities have subsidized fees because the government funds them, making higher education accessible to the general public.

Another reason private universities can be costly is because they offer high-quality education, modern facilities, and a conducive learning environment, which are catered for by the tuition fees.

Before gaining admission to the higher institution, there is a milestone to cross: the JAMB exam. Please see our post on the JAMB registration details if you haven’t taken yours yet. You can also explore how to check your JAMB exam result and other JAMB exam requirements and important dates.

    Important Note

The phrase “writing JAMB” or “checking JAMB” is commonly used to refer to the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). However, this is a misnomer and a non-standard use of English, as JAMB (the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board) is the body responsible for conducting and administering the UTME, the actual test that candidates take.

Saying “writing JAMB” is like saying “writing WAEC” or “writing NECO”—semantically imprecise but widely used. You can only write the exam conducted by the body but not the body itself.

Nevertheless, the expression has become so ingrained in everyday Nigerian English that it now functions as an accepted colloquialism, even if it’s not standard English. For clarity, please note that any reference to “checking JAMB” in this piece should be interpreted as sitting for the UTME.

How To Check JAMB Result Online Step By Step Guide

Would you like to check your JAMB results online? Perhaps you’ve been hearing about the online JAMB result checker, but you’re not sure what it’s all about. The JAMB result checker simply refers to the online JAMB Portal where students can access their result when JAMB releases it. This portal requires candidates to sign in or create an account.

Here’s how to check the JAMB result online, a step-by-step guide:

    1. Open the JAMB Result Checker, which is the official JAMB eFacility Portal
    2. Log in with your email address and password. If you don’t have an account, you can easily create one.
    3. Once you’re in, click “Print Result Slip”
    4. Select your exam year
    5. Select your payment method and pay
    6. Type in the phone number you used to create your profile code, or you can just type in your registration number

Your results will appear instantly if JAMB has released them. If you get an error message or a blank page, that means the result isn’t out yet or there’s a traffic overload on the JAMB site. You can also head to the section on Common Issues and Solutions in this article to discover what some common error messages mean.

Students should note that they must check their JAMB result with their registration number—there’s no alternative. When accessing your result on the portal, you need your JAMB registration number.

JAMB Result Checker Portal Login Process

In the previous section on how to check the JAMB result online step-by-step, we made it clear that the JAMB result checker is the same as the regular JAMB portal.

You must log into the JAMB result checker to check your JAMB result with your registration number.

Here are the JAMB result checker login steps:

However, if you’re yet to create an account on the JAMB result checker, you can create one by clicking “Create Account.” You’ll be asked to enter the email address linked to your registration and some other key details.

How To Check JAMB Result On Phone

The most common way to check JAMB results is via SMS. Students usually prefer this method because it’s fast, easy, and doesn’t need any internet connection. Here’s how to check the JAMB result via SMS on your phone:

    1. Send UTMERESULT to 55019 or 66019, using the mobile number linked to your JAMB registration, i.e., the number used to generate your profile code
    2. You will be debited ₦50 airtime by your network provider

If the result has been released, JAMB will send it to you immediately—the cumulative total and the subject breakdown. However, the influx of requests they receive upon exam release may cause delays in sending the results.

If you have sent the code and have yet to receive a response from JAMB, kindly exercise some caution as you will be charged N50 for every SMS you send. You might want to try again around the hours of the night (from 12 AM to 5 AM), when most people are asleep; this could reduce the traffic and aid in faster response from JAMB.

However, if you receive an error message, that means the result isn’t out yet. You can also head to the section on Common Issues and Solutions in this article to discover what some common error messages mean.

Note that after checking your JAMB result via SMS, you would still need to head to the portal to print out the result slip. You can do that by following the steps below:

    • Open the JAMB Result Checker, which is the official JAMB Portal
    • Login or create an account
    • Click “Print Result Slip”

Your result should automatically display since you have already checked it via SMS. However, JAMB sometimes takes a while to upload candidates’ results on the portal. So if you saw your result via SMS but didn’t see it on the portal, don’t fret—it just means JAMB is yet to upload it. You can check back after some days.

Common Issues and Solutions With JAMB Result Checker

Now that we’ve sorted how to check the JAMB result with the registration number and how to check the JAMB result on a phone, it’s time to tackle other topics associated with JAMB results.

Students often complain about certain challenges they encounter when trying to check their JAMB results. These may occur while checking your result on your phone or via SMS.

In this section, we’ll elaborate on the most common issues and solutions associated with the JAMB result checker.

I Can’t Remember My Registration Number

If you want to check the JAMB result with the registration number but can’t remember the number, you must visit a JAMB office to retrieve it.

Prior to now, JAMB allowed students to retrieve their registration number online. However, that service is no longer available online.

I Keep Receiving the Message, “Result Not Available”

If you can’t access your JAMB result and you keep receiving “Result Not Available,” it’s either one of the following:

    • You are using a phone number that is not linked to your JAMB registration. To access your result online or via SMS, ensure you use the same number connected to your registration, i.e., the number used to generate your profile code.
    • All or some of the results haven’t been released. Sometimes, JAMB releases the results batch by batch. So if your friends have seen their results and you haven’t, don’t panic—yours might still be cooking!
    • Network or technical glitches. Sometimes, too much traffic leads to system glitches, and system glitches could dispense several error messages. If this is what you’re encountering, wait a while and check back later.

I Keep Receiving the Message, “Result Withheld” on JAMB Result Checker

If the JAMB Result Checker online or via SMS says your result has been withheld, it means JAMB has intentionally restricted your result.

Your result might be withheld due to an issue with your Exam Centre. It could also be as a result of suspected malpractice, misconduct during the exam, or breach of procedural processes.

Most people think they know all there is to know about JAMB UTME. But that’s the number one mistake you’ll make in this journey—carrying the mindset that you know all about the exam.

It’s easy to miss important information and key details without being open-minded. So before we uncover the 2025 UTME exam date, here are some top things to note about JAMB UTME:

    • JAMB is strict about registration closing dates. The fixed closing date is not likely to be extended. Hence, 2025 UTME candidates must ensure they register as early as possible
    • Candidates below the age of 16 years will not be permitted to sit for the JAMB UTME unless they can prove an exceptional academic record
